Northern Michigan University gets numerous top finishes at Pre-U.S. Nationals CXC Cup Nordic skiing
In 10-kilometer classic mass-start races held Sunday, Wildcats junior Kjetil Baanerud won the men’s under-23 race in 26 minutes, 41.1 seconds, beating out NMU senior Zak Ketterson, who had redshirted this season and is currently representing the U.S. Ski Team and finished second in 27:06.5.
Northern freshman Tobias Moosmann was fifth in the race in 28:03.1, junior teammate Xavier Mansfield seventh in 28:33.2 and senior Leo Hipp eighth in 28:53.5.
Another win was posted by NMU freshman Matt Bourne in the men’s U-20 race in 28:39.5, while in the men’s senior race, Northern senior Mathias Aas-Rolid was runner-up in 27:36.6 as former Wildcats skier Ian Torchia won in 26:34.0.
For the Northern women, freshman Malin Boerjesjoe was second in the women’s 10K senior classic in 32:36.4, while in women’s U-23, NMU sophomore Katerina Hyncicova was second in 33:31.8 and freshman Pauline Forren fourth in 34:32.9. And NMU sophomore Savanna Fassio was third in the women’s U-20 race in 34:23.6.
Baanerud was runner-up in the men’s senior/U-20/U-18 freestyle sprint race on Saturday, finishing in 3 minutes, 20.75 seconds behind Ketterson, who won in 3:16.29. More than 120 skiers were entered.
Moosmann was third in this sprint in 3:22.50, while Aas-Rolid was seventh in 3:24.74, Bourne 13th in 3:28.66 and Mansfield 16th in 3:31.25.
In the women’s senior/U-20/U-18 freestyle sprint also held Saturday with 87 finishers, Boerjesjoe was runner-up in 3:57.25, about 6 1/2 seconds behind winner Alayna Sonnesyn of the Stratton Mountain, Vermont, T2 team. Hyncicova was fourth in 3:58.89, Fassio sixth in 4:03.60 and Forren 15th in 4:12.18.
The Wildcats return to Houghton on Jan. 2 for the U.S. National Championships, with events also to be held there on Jan. 3, 5 and 7.
