Marquette Redmen hockey team peppers Sault Ste. Marie in 9-1 victory Sunday

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School hockey team employed its goal-a-minute offense long enough to score a mercy rule-shortened 9-1 victory over Sault Ste. Marie at the Holiday Showcase on Sunday afternoon.

The Redmen (9-2) scored four goals in a span of 2 minutes, 44 seconds in the first period to take an insurmountable 4-0 lead in a game played at Lakeview Arena.

Even though the Soo scored the next goal later in the period on a shot by Gleb Baumann, Marquette got its rat-a-tat-tat offense going again in the second period, peppering Blue Devils goalie Triston Forgrave with another five goals over 7:26 to make it 9-1. He finished with 20 saves.

The Redmen finished the final 6 1/2 minutes of the period without allowing a goal, thus invoking the eight-goal mercy rule. MSHS junior Brennan Hakkola got the goaltending win after having to stop just four shots, three in the second period.

Gaetano Cammarata scored Marquette’s first goal of each period, while fellow senior teammate Hogan Nemetz scored back-to-back goals 1:36 apart midway through the second.

Redmen juniors Evan Kroll and Ansel Frost and sophomore Cole Ranta also had first-period goals, while seniors Lucas Guertin and Cooper Anderson added single tallies to the second-period onslaught.

Cammarata and Frost also had two assists apiece, while chalking up one each were Anderson; Kroll; seniors Andrew Fedrizzi, Ryan Baldwin and Jakob Peterson; junior Dylan Baldwin; sophomores Owen Riipi and Jack Sides; and freshman Ethan Phillips.

Marquette is off until Tuesday, Jan. 7, when it hosts Negaunee.
