Marquette Redettes advance to MHSAA Division 1 volleyball district tournament final after win at Petoskey

PETOSKEY — Led by Seiler Hruska, Marquette swept Petoskey in an MHSAA Division 1 volleyball district tournament semifinal match on Wednesday in Petoskey.

The Redettes, who won 25-22, 25-20, 26-24 to improve their season record to 40-4-3, advance to tonight’s district championship against the winner of Wednesday night’s other semifinal between Traverse City Central and Traverse City West. Results from that match weren’t available this morning on the MHSAA website, www.mhsaa.com. Regardless of which TC school is involved, the match will be played at 6 p.m. Though no site was indicated, the match will probably be played in Traverse City.

Hruska, a sophomore, made 14 kills and added three service aces and 16 digs. Aspen Michelin had five kills, six blocks and five digs; Maria Millado had four kills, two aces, five blocks and 11 digs; and Maiya King added a kill, four aces, three blocks, three digs and 20 set assists.

MSHS head coach Ann Crandell-Williams said her team was thrilled to return the favor to Petoskey, which swept the Redettes in three sets in last year’s Division 1 district championship match played in Gaylord.

“There’s no better feeling than achieving something you’ve worked hard for,” Crandell-Williams said. “Getting some redemption from their loss last year was our second major team goal. They’ll now have a chance to achieve their third and final goal (today).

“They had a lot of nerves going into (Wednesday) and throughout the first set, but were able to push through. Seiler had a solid night as usual. The girls’ blocking and digging is really what turned the tide for us. Everyone worked really hard in practice and tonight they executed the plan beautifully.”
