Amber Huebner, Erin Honkala combine on winning shot for Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team in 55-53 win over St. Cloud State

MARQUETTE — Junior Amber Huebner passed the ball to senior Erin Honkala for the game-winning basket with one tick of the clock remaining to lift Northern Michigan University to a 55-53 victory over St. Cloud State on Saturday.

Huebner, a Marquette Senior High School graduate, found Honkala on the block wide open as the senior made a layup to break a 53-53 tie in the Wildcats’ home opener.

Senior Jessica Schultz led Northern with 16 points and seven rebounds. NMU’s next highest scorer was freshman Makaylee Kuhn with eight.

Honkala also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Northern kept a lead throughout the fourth quarter until 25 seconds were left, when Madelin Dammann of St. Cloud (3-1) hit a 3-pointer to tie it 53-53. Dammann scored a game-high 27 points, including five treys.
