Northern Michigan University volleyball team pulls off sweep of Wayne State

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team picked up its second three-set sweep in its last three matches on Saturday afternoon as it dispatched Wayne State 25-19, 25-14, 25-21.

The Wildcats led for most of match, including throughout the latter stages of each set, to improve to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC. WSU fell to 8-9 and 3-6.

Sophomore Lizzy Stark finished with a team-high 15 kills, along with a service ace and nine digs; while senior Sarah Kuehn added nine kills to go with a Wildcat-high five blocks.

Sophomore Hailey Wickstrom of Calumet had seven kills and three blocks, while freshman Abigail Durecki also had seven kills with just one error, two aces and two blocks.

Freshman Lauren Van Remortel posted 34 assists and two blocks, sophomore Lauren Caprini a team-best 12 digs and two aces and sophomore Alli Yacko eight digs.

Durecki notched the winning kill in the opening set and Wickstrom had three down the final stretch of the second set, while Durecki again had the Wildcats’ final two points of the day with kills in the third set.

The Wildcats travel to the Midwest Region Crossover tournament on Friday and Saturday in Indianapolis, which includes multiple schools from the GLIAC, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

NMU faces Illinois-Springfield at 11 a.m. EST Friday, Cedarville at 6 p.m. Friday and Missouri-St. Louis at 1 p.m. Saturday, according to the Great Lakes Valley Conference website, www.glvcsports.com.
