Northern Michigan University men’s soccer teams finally scores but still loses

MARQUETTE — Despite breaking a four-game scoreless streak, the Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team lost its fifth straight, a 4-2 setback at home to Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday afternoon.

After the Rangers’ Todor Atlija made it 1-0 in the 13th minute, NMU’s scoreless string ended just over 13 minutes later when freshman Ryan Palmbaum booted a corner kick across the field and found junior Vegard Ervall, who headed the ball in for his third goal of the season.

Previously, the Wildcats (3-8, 2-5 GLIAC) had suffered four straight 1-0 losses and hadn’t scored since a 2-0 home conference win over Upper Iowa on Sept. 22.

Parkside (6-4, 5-1) answered with a goal by Jack Mittelsteadt later in the opening half and another by Leki Prpa early in the second half for a two-goal advantage.

Northern cut its deficit to 3-2 in the 76th minute when senior Eric Suess centered a ball from far back in the field toward the box. Senior Ben Hoffman eventually got control of it and headed it into the corner of the net.

However, the Rangers added insurance with about eight minutes left on a goal by Rade Novakovich.

Wildcats sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Restum made four saves, the same number as Parkside netminder Juan Gonzalez. Each team took 11 shots as NMU held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Palmbaum led Northern with four shots, two of them on goal, as Ervall and Hoffman had two apiece, including one each on goal. Teammates Callum Olpin and Quinn Putt each had a shot on goal, too.

NMU hits the road for the rest of this month, not returning home until a game against Davenport on Nov. 1.
