Marquette Redettes volleyball runners-up at Leland tournament

LELAND — The Marquette volleyball team was perfect all day except when it came to the hosts at the Leland Varsity Tournament on Saturday.

The Redettes lost to the Comets during pool play then again in the tournament championship match to finish as runners-up in the downstate event.

“It was a good day overall,” MSHS head coach Ann Crandell-Williams said. “The girls served consistently and put up tough swings all day.

“As far as the losses, we passed well below our usual average and we just didn’t pull through defensively during the big games.

“Leland is ranked in the state in their division and they play very disciplined volleyball.”

The Redettes (37-4-3) swept two-set matches from Central Lake and Maple City Glen Lake while losing in three sets to Leland. That advanced them to the quarterfinals, where they defeated the Traverse City West JV in two sets, then to the semifinals, where Marquette also swept Manistique in two sets.

The championship match also lasted two sets.
