MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School volleyball team mostly kept Kingsford’s big hitters at bay to pull off a three-sweep in a Great Northern Conference matchup on Thursday.

The Redettes prevailed 25-11, 25-22, 25-11 to improve to 34-2-3 overall and 7-0 in the GNC.

“Kingsford has a good program and a lot of big hitters, and we knew they were going to come out playing hard,” MSHS head coach Ann Crandell-Williams said. “There were a lot of great plays and long rallies. The Kingsford crowd was really rattling at times, and our girls kept their heads and pulled through.

“Our serving was hot and cold … and the better we served, the easier it was to pull away. I feel like our girls’ ability to cover the floor has improved a lot throughout the season, and I’m really proud of them for their defense….

“We have one (match) left to go in the GNC and these girls are laser focused.”

Sophomore outside hitter Seiler Hruska continued to lead Marquette’s offense, making 18 of the team’s 32 kills. With just one error, she had a sterling attack percentage of .515 while adding 10 digs and a service ace.

Sophomore Maria Millado added team highs of 11 digs and four aces while sharing team honors with three blocks and making three kills.

Senior Aspen Michelin also made three blocks while adding in four kills, and senior Maiya King had 26 set assists, four digs, two kills, two aces and a block.

Marquette travels downstate to take part in the Leland Varsity Tournament on Saturday morning before completing its regular season on Tuesday night at Escanaba.

Manistique 3, Gladstone 0

At Gladstone, the Emeralds swept the Braves, 25-10, 25-12, 25-17, to clinch the Mid-Peninsula Conference title for the second straight year to go along with one won in 2015.

“I just told them to play their game, and treat it like any other match,” Manistique head coach Amy Nixon said. “We didn’t want to overthink it, we didn’t want to take it lightly, and we just wanted to treat it like any other match.”

The Emeralds (27-3-3) set the tone in the first set, taking an early lead and not giving it up. Manistique established a 13-6 lead after a short service run from Lenna Smith, and Emilee McDaniel finished the set with a six-point run.
