Lizzy Stark, Sarah Kuehn lead Northern Michigan University to volleyball sweep at Northwood

MIDLAND — The last couple of weeks have been rough for the Northern Michigan University volleyball team as the Wildcats had lost four straight matches.

Then on Saturday, NMU turned things around and got back in the win column with a three-set sweep of Northwood, 27-25, 25-23, 25-22.

Lizzy Stark led the Wildcats with 14 kills, while Sarah Kuehn had 12 and Calumet native Hailey Wickstrom 10. Teammate Lauren Caprini chipped in two service aces to help the offensive attack.

Defensively, Alli Yacko and Madeline Crowley led the way with 14 digs apiece.

In the opening set, NMU held a 15-7 advantage, but the Timberwolves rallied to take a 24-20 lead. However, the Wildcats fought back and closed out the set on a 7-1 run with Yacko getting the winning point on a service ace.

The second set was even tighter. With the two teams tied 22-22, Wickstrom picked up a kill and a Northwood attacking error put the Wildcats up two. After the Timberwolves cut the deficit to one, Wickstrom won the set for NMU with a kill.

Tied 14-14 in the third set, Northern slowly built a 20-15 advantage. The Timberwolves pulled within 20-17, but Stark stopped that rally with a kill. Northwood tried to make a last comeback, getting within one at 23-22, but the Timberwolves committed a service error and Northern’s Lauren Van Remortel ended the set and the match with a kill.

NMU (6-9, 3-4 GLIAC) returns home for two GLIAC matches this weekend, starting with Ashland at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Vandament Arena.
