Katie Etelamaki, Madison Malon tops for their teams at Conference Crossover women’s cross country meet in Illinois

ROMEOVILLE, Illinois — Freshman Madison Malon paced Northern Michigan University at the Conference Crossover women’s cross country meet on Saturday at Lewis University.

This largest NCAA Division II-only meet in the country featured 36 teams with the Wildcats placing 16th on a brisk day with 20 mph winds and temperatures in the low 40s.

Northern had 432 points, just behind 15th-place Ferris State with 425. Also from the GLIAC, Grand Valley State won the title with 32, while Saginaw Valley State was fourth with 211, Michigan Tech fifth with 216 and Wayne State seventh with 259. Wisconsin-Parkside was 24th with 701, Purdue Northwest 27th with 736 and Lake Superior State 35th with 1,113.

Ferris senior Katie Etelamaki, a Westwood graduate, was eighth in 22 minutes, 55.4 seconds over six kilometers.

Malon led NMU by coming in 42nd in 23:39.6, while senior teammate Katelyn Smith was 64th in 24:01.3.

Also scoring for Northern was senior Paige Du Bois, 136th in 24:53.8; freshman Meghan Langworthy, 141st in 24:59.5; and sophomore Anna Kelley, 160th in 25:12.3.

Other finishers and their times for the Wildcats were freshman Kimberly Carviou, 25:24.7; junior Ellise Longley, 25:26.6; freshman Caroline Vegeberg, 25:33.2; sophomore Katrina Salmen, 25:34; freshman Morgan Lyon, 26:14.2; freshman Emily Sterling, 26:39.9; sophomore Chrysanthe Patselas, 26:41; sophomore Aubrey Friedrich, 26:45.9; and redshirt freshman Katie Cleven, 27:37.9.

The Wildcats return to Marquette for their only home meet of the season, the Upper Peninsula Championships, at 3 p.m. Friday at the NMU Golf Course.
