Fontinha leads NMU men’s golfers

MIDLAND — Senior Kurtis Fontinha led the men’s golf team at Northern Michigan University to a sixth-place finish out of 10 teams at the Northwood Men’s Invitational held at the Midland Country Club on Sunday and Monday.

Fontinha shot 73 and 79 Sunday and added 73 on Monday for a three-round total of 225, good for a tie for 18th.

Northern totaled 914 for its best finish of the season. Saginaw Valley State was just ahead of NMU in fifth with 909 as the meet was won by Wayne State with 865.

For the Wildcats, sophomore Carter Mason of Negaunee was their No. 2 shooter, tying for 21st with 80-73-73–226, while senior Chris Black tied for 31st with 82-81-69–232. Black’s final round 69 was the third best of the entire event.

Also for NMU, senior Kyle Pouliot of Gladstone tied for 44th with 80-77-79–236 and freshman Scott Spyra tied for 54th with 83-76-84–243.

The Wildcats have one more meet before hanging up their clubs for the spring schedule that begins in March. Northern will be at the Kohler Classic at Whistling Straits Golf Course near Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on Oct. 21-22.
