Arni Eiriksson, Francisco Espinoza lead Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team to double-overtime win

MIDLAND — The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team made the wait worth it after posting a 3-2 double-overtime victory at Northwood on Monday afternoon.

The game, postponed from Sunday due to field conditions, marked the first road OT victory in the team’s four-year history and also the first win ever over the Timberwolves.

NMU improved to 7-8 overall and 6-5 in the GLIAC, good for a tie for fourth, as the Wildcats netted two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to force the tie before getting the game-winner barely a minute into OT No. 2.

Northern has won four in a row, its longest ever in GLIAC game and one short of its longest win streak of any kind.

Northwood (8-6-1, 6-5) was staked to a 2-0 lead following a late first-half goal by Jack Doyle and early second-half score from Austin Hobbs.

NMU finally got on the board with 9:26 remaining in regulation when junior Arni Eiriksson notched his first career goal off a pass from sophomore Kaffie Kurz, who got his first assist this season.

Less than four minutes later, Eiriksson also scored the game leveler as senior Ben Hoffman picked up his fourth assist of the campaign. The scoring play was set up by freshman Francisco Espinoza with 5:51 left when he took a shot that was blocked. Hoffman gathered in the ball and set up Eiriksson for his goal 15 seconds later.

Espinoza made good on another shot 1:01 into the second overtime for the game winner as freshman Ryan Palmbaum notched his four assist of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Restum recorded four saves for the win as Palmbaum paced NMU shooters with five shots as Espinoza had three and Northern held a 18-17 shots edge.

The Wildcats come home for their final weekend of games at the NMU Soccer Field when they host Davenport at 1 p.m. Friday and Ashland at 1 p.m. Sunday. The regular season wraps up for NMU with a game at Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday, Nov. 7.
