Area high school football teams falling into expected divisions

EAST LANSING — The Michigan High School Athletic Association came out Tuesday with a list of high school football teams with three or more wins through Week 5 of the season, and area teams making the list are firmly entrenched in the division they’ve traditionally been in.

The MHSAA listed 269 teams in 11-player football, which if divided equally into what will become eight playoff divisions, would place about 33 1/2 teams per division.

Part of the smallest 34 schools in enrollment, which should make up the Division 8 field, is Ishpeming, which is listed as the 250th highest enrollment among three-plus-win teams.

L’Anse falls firmly into the next highest enrollment group of 33-34 teams at 213th largest, which would make it a Division 7 qualifier.

And in the next 33 or 34 schools up the enrollment ladder, the equivalent of Division 6, are Westwood and Negaunee at 180th and 181st, respectively.

That number of actual playoff qualifiers will be pared to 32 per division after the conclusion of the season. For the past 20 years of the current format of the playoffs, every 6-3 and 5-3 team has qualified with a number of 5-4 and 4-4 squads included to fill out the field.

This is the final year the MHSAA will strictly use number of wins to determine playoff qualifiers. Next year, the state will reintroduce its playoff point system to determine qualifiers in an attempt it says to keep teams from loading up with weak opponents.
