Northern Michigan University volleyball wins in 5 sets Saturday to finish Keweenaw Classic

HOUGHTON — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team evened its weekend and season record at 2-2 after defeating Minnesota-Crookston in five sets Saturday at the Keweenaw Classic hosted by Michigan Tech in Houghton.

The Wildcats prevailed 25-18, 15-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-8.

Sophomore Hailey Wickstrom of Calumet led the NMU offense with 17 kills as she added two blocks, while fellow sophomore Lizzy Stark had 15 kills and senior Sarah Kuehn 10.

Freshman Lauren Van Remortel had 53 assists for her high so far, while Stark notched five of her team’s 12 aces. And sophomore Lauren Caprini had 20 digs as Van Remortel had 13, while freshman Abigail Durecki had two blocks to go with four aces.

The Wildcats travel to another tournament for four matches this weekend at the University of Indianapolis Invitational where they open against GLIAC foe Davenport on Friday afternoon.
