Northern Michigan University men’s golfers 10th at Island Resort Collegiate Invitational in Wilson
WILSON — The Northern Michigan University men’s golf team finished 10th against a mostly NCAA Division I field at the Island Resort Collegiate Invitational tournament held at Sage Run Golf Club at the Island Resort & Casino in northern Menominee County over the Labor Day weekend.
Leading Northern was senior Chris Black with rounds of 78, 77 and 81 for a 236 total, good for 67th place. Senior teammate Kurtis Fontinha tied for 70th with 81-77-82–240, while senior Kyle Pouliot was 72nd with 80-78-85–243.
Sophomore and Negaunee High School graduate Carter Mason was 73rd with 78-83-85–246, while freshman Scott Spyra was 74th with 82-89-90–261. Also competing for NMU was freshman Sky Nam in 75th with 92-87-98–277.
The individual medalist was Michigan State junior James Piot with a 9-under-par total of 68-70-69–207.
Liberty won the team title with 855 with four schools within five — Purdue had 856, East Carolina and Central Florida each with 859 and MSU with 860. NMU totaled 965 as Detroit Mercy was immediately ahead with 914.
