Negaunee wins, Gwinn falls in girls tennis matches

KINGSFORD — Negaunee needed three sets at several flights, but powered its way to a sweep of doubles in a 7-1 victory at Kingsford in a high school girls tennis meet held Monday.

The Miners’ Shayla Williams and Maci Austin won 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 over Maggie Meneghini and Karlee Hulkkonen at No. 3 doubles, while NHS’ Daylyn Crew and Emma Miller took a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Liz Penegro and Jenna Olkkonen.

Negaunee singles players Lilly Nelson at No. 1, Jillian Skewis at No. 2 and Lexi Mason at No. 3 all won in two sets.

Iron Mountain 7-6, Gwinn 1-2

At Gwinn on Monday, the Mountaineers and Modeltowners finished a match called off by weather on Thursday, then played their regularly scheduled match.

IM won the postponed match 7-1 and took the regular meet 6-2.

Kadie LaRock won twice at No. 1 doubles with different partners. In the makeup match, she teamed up with Raina Humphrey to win 6-4, 10-8 over Megan Murray and Callie Bianco, then in the regular clash, she partnered with Emily Curtice to win 7-6, 7-6 over the same IM pair.

Gwinn also got a win from Amaya Cornelius and Mackenzie Malette at No. 3 doubles in the regular match, beating IM’s Natalia Brown and Mariah Alquist 7-5, 6-4.

All matches in both meets lasted two sets.
