Negaunee Miners post pair of 8-0 girls tennis shutouts vs. Ishpeming, Gwinn

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee girls tennis team cruised to two wins Tuesday, sweeping Ishpeming and Gwinn both by perfect 8-0 scores.

The Miners decided to move some players around in both meets and judging by the scores, they all performed well.

In the Ishpeming meet, Negaunee didn’t drop a set as Lilly Nelson (No. 1 singles), Jillian Skewis (No. 2) and Lexi Mason (No. 3) all won their matches 6-0, 6-0, while Annika Tervo earned her victory by forfeit at No. 4 singles.

The Miners also cruised in doubles as head coach Kyle Saari said he was pleased with how his players coming off the bench performed.

“Faith (Mager), Izzy (Kantola) and Courtney (Enright) all stepped into the lineup and did a nice job,” he said. “It was a good experience for girls to get an opportunity.”

In the Gwinn meet, Skewis, Mason and Trevo each notched 6-0, 6-0 victories. Nelson, on the other hand, got a bit of a fight in her match before defeating the Modeltowners’ Joleigh Martinez (6-1, 6-2) at No. 1.

The Miners once again dominated in doubles and didn’t drop a game at either No. 1 or No. 4 singles, something Saari was encouraged by with the Mid-Peninsula Conference scheduled for today at Westwood.

“We played well in a final tuneup before the conference,” Saari said. “It’s important to stay fresh and keep having some fun this time of the year. The girls have been pretty focused, yet we’re playing loose.”
