Marquette Redmen make it a 2-0 boys soccer weekend

TRAVERSE CITY — The Marquette boys soccer team made it a weekend sweep downstate after defeating winning Saturday.

Senior captain Trevor Salmon registered a three-goal hat trick and freshman teammate Max Dawson scored twice in the Redmen’s 5-2 victory at Traverse City Central, which followed Friday’s 4-3 win in Petoskey.

The two players alternated goals and also assisted on several of each other’s goals.

Salmon opened the scoring with a header goal assisted by Dawson, then Dawson made it 2-0 on a Salmon pass. After TCC cut Marquette’s lead to a single goal, Salmon scored with seven seconds left in the first half off a corner kick by senior Mack Vezina.

Marquette started off the second half by upping its lead to 4-1 on another Dawson goal assisted by Salmon before TCC answered again with about 12 minutes left.

Then on the ensuing play following that last goal, Salmon scored off the kickoff, catching TCC’s goalkeeper too far out of his net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Harrison Anthos faced six shots.

The Redmen host the Escanaba Bayside club team at 6 p.m. Tuesday before going to Kingsford at 6 p.m. EDT Thursday.
