Marquette Redettes girls tennis team sweeps top flights for win at Kingsford

MARQUETTE — Marquette swept the top three flights in both singles and doubles to record a 6-2 high school girls tennis victory over visiting Kingsford on Monday afternoon.

The Redettes dropped 10 games combined in Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles and the same number in Nos. 1, 2 and 3 doubles.

That included singles victories by Elysa Olivier at No. 1, Mollie Kilpela at No. 2 and Campbell Kallio at No. 3.

“All of our seniors were great,” MSHS head coach Derek Sandstrom said. “Elysa and Mollie continue to dominate at the top of singles and it’s starting to rub off on some of the other girls.”

He was also impressed with several of his doubles tandems — No. 1 Ryleigh Jackson and Kennedy Tate and No. 2 Breanne Sandstrom and Sydney McCarthy.

“Ryleigh and Kennedy were really on today,” the coach said. “They are still learning just how good they can be, but they are peaking at the right time.

“Syd and Bre have quietly put together a nice run going into the tournaments as well.

“I think we are in a good place heading into the conference meet.”

That Great Northern Conference meet will bring the Redettes back to Kingsford on Wednesday.
