Gwinn spikers sweep Westwood

ISHPEMING — The Gwinn volleyball team earned a nice win Tuesday night, sweeping Westwood 3-0 on the road.

The Modeltowners took the match (25-15, 25-18, 25-16) with the help of some strong offensive play from Emily Curtice, Halle Beauchamp and Tianna Taylor. The threesome combined for 19 kills with Curtice leading the way with seven. Taylor, Marissa Delmont and Megan Ruokolainen all chipped in three aces to the Modeltowners attack, while Delmont also had 25 set assists.

Curtice was Gwinn’s defensive leader as well as she finished with 12 digs, while Delmont and Taylor both had six.

“We are still struggling to stay at our level regardless of who we play in any given night and staying focused through the match,” Modeltowners head coach Toni Roberts said. “Tonight had a lot of great moments though too. I messed up the lineup in game two and had my left and right hitter switched, and they were still able to overcome that (and) play a good game, even in the wrong position. I was proud of the adaptability and to play the game anywhere on the court. We are starting to see leadership emerge on our court and good things happen.

“Halle possibly had her breakout night tonight. She was attacking the ball strong, making smart plays and put up a great blocking defense on the net for us. Emily was really strong for us again tonight. We are lucky to have her on our team and be consistent for us day in and day out.”

Gwinn’s JV team also swept the Patriots, 2-0. The Modeltowners host Negaunee Thursday.
