Black leads NMU men golfers

FINDLAY, Ohio — The Northern Michigan University men’s golf team finished in a tie for 15th in an 18-team field at the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational hosted by Findlay University and held Monday and Tuesday at the Findlay Country Club.

The Wildcats totaled 917 for three rounds, shooting four-player rounds of 301 and 313 Monday to go with 303 Tuesday.

Wayne State won with 872, just a stroke ahead of the host Oilers in a field that featured a number of current and former GLIAC schools, including Tiffin, Indianapolis, Grand Valley State, Ashland, Hillsdale, Ferris State, Northwood and Malone.

Senior Chris Black led NMU, shooting rounds of 74, 81 and an even-par 72 for 227 and a tie for 38th.

Fellow senior Kurtis Fontinha tied for 52nd with 77-76-77–230, while freshman Scott Spyra was 68th with 76-76-81–233.

NMU sophomore and Negaunee product Carter Mason tied for 69th with 80-81-73–234, while Northern senior and Gladstone grad Kyle Pouliot tied for 75th with 74-80-82–236.

NMU is off until Oct. 6-7 for the Northwood Invitational in Midland.
