Marquette Redmen earn first boys soccer win of season

MARQUETTE — Marquette Senior High School won its home opener for the high school boys soccer season on Tuesday, winning 4-1 over Northland Pines of Eagle River, Wisconsin.

Senior Trevor Salmon scored the Redmen’s two second-half goals after he assisted on his team’s second of two first-half goals.

Sophomore Nick Lindberg scored Marquette’s opening goal, then assisted on his team’s final goal. His goal was unassisted from a corner kick.

Freshman Max Dawson also had a goal and an assist, scored the Redmen’s second goal and assisting on the third.

“It was a more complete game then the games we played this last weekend,” he said about a three-match Saturday at Saginaw Heritage that saw Marquette lose each game by a single goal. “I moved a few players around and it really made a big difference in the flow of the game for us. Still a work in progress but definitely a step in the right direction.”

Northland Pines scored after MSHS (1-3) built a 4-0 lead, and the game was called with two minutes remaining due to lightning spotted in the area.

Marquette sophomore goalkeeper Harrison Anthos made six saves in the seven shots he faced.

On Thursday, the Redmen travel to Iron Mountain for a 7 p.m. EDT game.
