L’Anse captures Division 4 district softball championship, beating Ishpeming in finals

L’ANSE — L’Anse put on a dominating offensive performance Saturday, winning the MHSAA Division 4 district softball tournament on Saturday.

The Purple Hornets opened with a 10-0 victory in six innings over Gwinn before fending off Ishpeming 12-2 in seven innings in the championship.

In the tourney’s other game, the Hematites opened with a 7-4 victory over Superior Central.

No information was available from the L’Anse-Gwinn game.

L’Anse 12, Ishpeming 2

Josie Rice went the distance for the Hornets to get the pitching win, going seven innings and giving up five hits and two walks while striking out one.

Losing hurler Hailey Hytinen started and went four innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and a walk while also fanning one. Tia Mattila went the final three innings, allowing four runs on two hits with five walks as she K’d four.

Senior Haley Nankervis paced the Hornets with four hits, including a double, and knocked in two runs and scored five times.

IHS’ Madison Pruett cracked a pair of doubles and collected two RBIs.

Ishpeming 7, Superior Central 4

The Hematites broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the key fifth, Korey Kaukola singled and Tia Mattila and junior Berkli Asgaard walked to load the bases before Corp also drew a walk to bring home a run.

Mattila went seven innings for the win, scattering six hits and six walks as she fanned six. Rutter went all six innings for the Cougars.

Kaukola went 3 for 4 with a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored.
