Westwood wins 8-0, Gwinn take 2 flights vs. Iron Mountain in boys tennis meets

ISHPEMING — The Mid-Peninsula Conference Tournament is Thursday and the Westwood boys tennis team is heading into it on a high note as the Patriots swept Ishpeming 8-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

“Today was a positive way to go into the M-PC Tournament with everyone getting a win,” Patriots head coach Chris Jackson said. “Negaunee will be the heavy favorite. We have to find a way to keep things close and give ourselves a chance.”

Singles players Adam Hyttinen at No. 1, Anthony Couveau at No. 2, Chad Pohlman at No. 3 and Matt Paavo at No. 4 each earned two-set victories for Westwood with Couveau and Paavo not losing a game.

In doubles, the Patriots tandem of Zach Niemi and Jacob Adriano defeated Ishpeming’s Joey King and Drake Sundberg 6-1, 6-2, while Westwood won its other three doubles matches without dropping a game.

Iron Mountain 6, Gwinn 2

At Gwinn, the Modeltowners got two nice singles wins from Jared Rowland and Mason Bockert.

Rowland at No. 2 defeated IM’s Dakota Galazzi 6-2, 7-6, while Bockert came back at No. 3 for a three-set win over the Mountaineers’ David Juul, 4-6, 7-5, 10-3.

However, those were the only two victories that the Modeltowners could manage as IM’s Ryan Hakamaki defeated Jacob Porubsky in the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-2, and fellow Mountaineer Michael Colavecchi took down Chris Sirois at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2.

The Mountaineers also swept all four doubles flights to complete their victory.

“I remain impressed with my second and third singles players, who pulled out big victories,” Gwinn head coach Dan Turecky said. “Jared continues to improve with each match. He’s probably going to be seeded in the upcoming M-PC Tournament.”

Marquette 5, Escanaba 3

At Escanaba, the visiting Redmen won three of four doubles flights after splitting singles right down the middle.

The one match that went three sets was won by Marquette’s Jack Franchino and Casey Yeadon at No. 4 singles, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 over Esky’s Garrett Johnson and Isaac Maki.

Senior Alex Olivier didn’t play at No. 1 singles as his replacement, Max Lastra Yanez, fell 6-1, 6-1 to the Eskymos’ Christer Carne.

“The first time we played them we lost 7-1,” EHS coach Tom Penegor said. “It was nice to see that we played them closer today. It’s a good match going into the (Great Northern Conference) tournament (on Thursday). Overall, it was a good day for us.”
