Westwood tennis team holds off Munising, while Negaunee, Marquette pull off sweeps

ISHPEMING — On a nice day for tennis, the Westwood boys team got a good test from Munising Tuesday afternoon, but the Patriots fought off the Mustangs to earn a 6-2 victory.

Westwood won three of the four singles flights with Adam Hyttinen (No. 1), Chad Pohlman (No. 3) and Matt Paavo (No. 4) each earning two-set victories. Munising’s lone singles win game at No. 2 where the Mustangs’ Mitchell Coyne outlasted Anthony Couveau in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, the Mustangs earned a hard-earned win at No. 1 as Landon Peters and Eli Werner outdueled the Patriots’ Zach Niemi and Jacob Adriano for a three-set victory, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

However, Westwood’s Connor Traver and Hudson Uren (No. 2) were among doubles teams earning two-set wins.

“Hudson and Connor played their best match of the season,” Westwood head coach Chris Jackson said. “They played well from start to finish. We are starting managing our matches better throughout the lineup.”

Negaunee 8, West Iron County 0

At Negaunee, the Miners improved to 9-0 in the sweep.

Not every match was easy as Chas Kumpula (No. 1 singles), Will Luke (No. 2) and Jordon Mason (No. 4) each had to gut out hard two-set wins. Meanwhile, the Miners’ Peyton Anderson had the match of the day as he outfought WIC’s Mitch Ballinger for a three-set win, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.

“We responded well again today against an athletic team,” Miners head coach Kyle Saari said. “Chas was terrific at No. 1 singles and I like how we played as a team when tested in pressure situations. We were able to pull out all three tiebreaks and those situations are important late in the year.”

Marquette 8, Menominee 0

At Marquette, the Redmen cruised to an easy sweep.

Marquette’s Alec Olivier didn’t lose a game at No. 1 singles, while Nick Olivier got a two-set win (6-2, 6-2) at No. 2.

The best match of the day came at No. 3 singles as the Redmen’s Abram Moffitt defeated Menominee’s Felipe Zamora in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
