Westwood, Negaunee boys tennis teams post shutouts

ISHPEMING — The Westwood High School varsity boys tennis team got back into the win column Tuesday afternoon with an 8-0 home sweep of Iron Mountain.

The Patriots are 4-1 after Monday’s home loss to Negaunee.

Westwood head coach Chris Jackson was most impressed with the play at No. 2 singles from Anthony Couveau, as well as the No. 1 doubles team of Zach Niemi and Jacob Adriano.

Couveau defeated Iron Mountain’s Dakota Galeazzi 6-0, 6-1, while Niemi and Adriano pulled out a win over Jaden Vicenzi and Joey Bogaudo which required a tiebreaker in each sets 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2).

“Anthony played very consistent in his straight-set win,” Jackson said. “He is becoming more patient and waiting for the right moment to take over points.

“Zach and Jacob were able to play at their best in both tiebreakers to pull out a close win. You have to stay aggressive to be successful at No. 1 doubles.”

Westwood visits Gwinn today at 4 p.m.

Negaunee 8, Gladstone 0

At Negaunee, the Miners improved to 6-0 after not dropping a set.

Miners head coach Kyle Saari was particularly impressed with the play of junior Chas Kumpula at No. 1 singles and the No. 4 doubles team of junior Parker Ring and senior Peter Ruokola.

“Chas hit solid and he’s really growing into how he wants to play,” Saari said. “He’s adding a few shots, works hard and he’s passionate about always improving.

“Peter and Parker had a nice day at No. 4, too.”

Kumpula defeated Gladstone’s Ben Flaminio 6-0, 6-0 while Ring and Ruokola topped the team of Eric Leonoff and Cole Dawson 6-0, 6-1.

Negaunee visits Marquette at 3:30 p.m. today.

Munising 5, Gwinn 3

At Gwinn, the Modeltowners’ three singles victories weren’t enough to overcome a sweep by Munising in doubles.

At No. 1 singles, Gwinn’s Jacob Porubsky topped Munising’s Mason Schieding 6-1, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (10-8). Gwinn’s other singles victories came at the No. 3 and No. 4 flights. Mason Bockert defeated Russ Holloway 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, while Chris Sirois edged Guillermo Sese at No. 4 in a three-setter, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Munising’s lone singles win came at No. 2 with Mitchell Coyne topping Jared Rowland 6-0, 6-2.

The lengthy No. 1 singles match was likely the most intriguing.

“Although we were again shorthanded and had to default No. 4 doubles and adjust my usual line-up, singles continues to play well,” Gwinn head coach Dan Turecky said. “Jake (Porubsky) continues to improve with each match and won in a three-hour, three-set match under windy conditions.”

In doubles, it was all Mustangs, led by the No. 1 duo of Landon Peters and Eli Werner topping Gwinn’s Aaron Borrett and John Deatrick 6-0, 6-0.
