Redettes runners-up at Wisconsin soccer tourney
WAUPACA, Wis. — Marquette won a pair of games before falling in the championship of the Comet Varsity Invitational to finish as runner-up among eight teams on Saturday.
The Redettes opened with a 5-1 victory over Marinette, Wisconsin, as senior captain Lauren Kurzawa and sophomore Paige Britton each scored two goals with junior Sydney McCarthy scoring the other goal.
Britton got MSHS on the board on an assist by junior Ivy Packard before McCarthy made it 2-0 with an assist going to junior Taylor Dusseault. Kurzawa had then had two straight goals for Marquette with Marinette getting its lone goal between them. Assists on Kurzawa’s goals were credited to senior Kayley Elmblad and junior Rachel Hoult. Elmblad got her second assist on Britton’s second goal.
Eagle River Northland Pines, Wisconsin, held tough with Marquette before the Redettes emerged with a 2-1 win. NP opened the scoring before Kurzawa evened things as she outsprinted a defender, got the ball in front of the net alone and put it in. Pickard got the game-winner on an assist from Britton.
In the finals, Prairie du Sac Sauk Prairie shut down the Marquette offense for a 2-0 victory.
The Redettes return home for a game at 6 p.m. today against Kingsford on the MSHS turf field.
