Negaunee wins both ends of high school baseball twinbill vs. Superior Central Cougars

NEGAUNEE — It definitely didn’t feel like baseball weather Tuesday, but the Negaunee baseball team wasn’t fazed by the cold as it swept Superior Central in a competitive doubleheader.

The Miners took the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 1-0 to remain undefeated in eight games.

“We’ve had some really good pitching,” Negaunee manager Jason Siik said. “We have a team ERA (earned-run average) that’s like 1.83, which is (about) eight runs lower than last year. I think a lot of that has to do with maturity.

“We had to throw in some younger guys last year and I think that experience has helped and it’s starting to pay off.

“(SC) is a good team. They’ve got some athletes and some really good ball players. Their starting pitching is really good.”

In the first game, the Cougars struck first with a run in the first, but Negaunee answered back with two in its half of the inning. The Miners added another run in the second, and after SC got one back in the top of the fourth, Negaunee plated three more in the bottom of that inning to pull away.

Alex Munson got the win for the Miners, giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Parker Maki took the loss for the Cougars as he surrendered six runs on 11 hits with a strikeout and two walks.

Eric Anderson led Negaunee at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Logan Fish had a double, a run and two RBIs and Rylie Nummela went 2 for 2 with two runs.

SC was led by Maki, who went 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Kyle Frusti, who was 1 for 2 with an RBI. Clayton Smith was 1 for 3 with a run scored for the Cougars.

The second game was a pitcher’s duel between the Miners’ Tanner Peterson and Cougars’ Zach Englund. The hurlers gave up just three hits apiece and combined for 17 strikeouts. However, Peterson had one edge on Englund and that was in the run column as Jason Waterman’s sacrifice fly in the second inning drove in the only run of the game.

“Tanner was phenomenal,” Siik said. “He painted really well. We were going to hold him back for pitch count, but he’s a bulldog and didn’t want to come out.”

Carter Richardson went 2 for 2 with a run for the Miners, while Smith, Frusti and Eli Werner each had a hit for the Cougars.
