ISHPEMING — It was a beautiful day at the Ishpeming Playgrounds to get the annual WIN — Westwood, Ishpeming and Negaunee — track meet in on Tuesday afternoon.

Hosted by the Hematites, Negaunee claimed the girls team title with 86 points, followed by Westwood with 58 and Ishpeming with 34.

Ishpeming claimed the boys team title with 71, followed by Westwood with 62 and Negaunee with 44.

The Miners girls won 10 out of 17 events, with junior Chloe Norman taking four of those.

Norman earned victories in both the 100- and 300-meter low hurdles, while also excelling through in the field in the long jump and high jump.

Junior teammate Emily Paupore added in three wins of her own. Paupore led the charge in the distance races, claiming victories in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

Negaunee girls head coach Vickie Paupore said she was happy with the performances of Norman and her daughter Emily.

“I’m really proud of those two girls,” she said. “Emily ran all four distance races. I thought she was going to be exhausted by the time she ran the two-mile.”

Freshman Leah McCracken also won the shot put for the Miners while junior Abbie Tollefson made a throw of 109 feet to win the discus.

“I’m very impressed with Abbie because you just don’t see a throw of that distance this early in the season,” Paupore said. “We’ve had a bit of a slow start to the year. We have 17 freshmen, but that’s what high school track is all about. I’m happy to see them step in. It’s great to see.”

Ishpeming won the 400 and 800 relays, while Westwood took the 1,600 relay while Negaunee the 3,200 relay.

The Hematites had two individual wins on the girls side, coming from senior Hailey Smith in the 100 and junior Kayla Koski in the 200.

The Patriots girls also earned two individual wins, the first coming from sophomore Elizabeth Williams in the 400 and the other from junior Katelyn Anttila in the pole vault.

The Westwood boys claimed the 400 and 1600 relays, while also earning five individual event victories.

Sophomore Jack Boase won the 110 high hurdles event while junior Chad Pohlman claimed the 400. Senior sprinter Nathan Beckman won the 200 while the Patriots also won two field events — junior Elliot LeMire in the pole vault and Ty Alderton in the high jump.

Ishpeming also saw success in the field, winning three among its eight victories.

Senior Logan Kruhlik claimed both the discus and shot put, while fellow senior Coulton Prillwitz won the long jump. Prillwitz also won the 300 hurdles.

Ishpeming also won the 3,200 relay, while junior Jonah Broberg led the way for the Hematites boys with three event wins — the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

The Negaunee boys won the 800 relay and the 100, won by junior Drew DuShane.

Winning times and distances weren’t available.

Westwood, Negaunee and Ishpeming return to action at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Negaunee Lions Invitational.
