Munising upends Ishpeming Hematites, Marquette ties West Iron County

ISHPEMING — The competition was fiercest at the No. 4 flights as Munising pulled off a 7-1 high school boys tennis victory at Ishpeming on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hematites (0-5-1) won their only match at No. 4 doubles, where Preston Collette and Fisher Skoglund gutted out a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Mustangs’ Joe Holcomb and Cole Whitehead.

At No. 4 singles, Munising’s Lucas Westcomb fended off Dawsen Emanuelson for a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win.

“We played a little bit better, but Munising is strong at singles,” IHS coach Erl Langness said.

The Mustangs dropped just seven games total in the other six flights, including Mason Schieding at No. 1 singles taking a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Breck Bell, and Munising’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Landon Peters and Russ Holloway winning 6-1, 6-1 over Drake Asgaard and Otto Swanson.

While the Mustangs play at Gladstone this afternoon, Ishpeming is off until it plays at Westwood on Tuesday.
