Marquette Redmen boys win Marquette Invitational golf title

MARQUETTE — The Marquette boys golf team had to battle both the wind and a mist on Wednesday, but the Redmen still came out on top at the Marquette Invitational.

MSHS dominated the field with a total of 318 strokes as Jordan Jurmu earned medalist honors after shooting 74.

Marquette also took the next three spots individually with Tyler Bergwall finishing second with 78, while Ethan Sellers and Joe Luke tied for third with 83. Menominee’s Andrew MacIntyre rounded out the top five with 84.

Marquette’s B team finished in second place with 369 followed by Negaunee with 398, Menominee 403 and Munising 434. Gladstone didn’t field a full team.

Owen Riipi paced the Marquette B squad with 89, while Matt Anderson had 92, Nick Leafers 93 and John Weber 95.

Bryce Bowerman was the Mustangs’ top finisher as he took eighth overall with 91, while Nolan Corwin was the Miners’ leader with a 92. Also breaking 100 was Negaunee’s Luke Stenfors with 93 and Avery Hopper with 98.

On the girls side, three teams fielded full squads. Menominee won with 395 as the Maroons’ Josie Hofer was medalist with 94. Menominee also took the next two spots with Arikah Bellisle taking second with 98 and Emma Hofer third with 100.

The Redettes didn’t have a full team, but Morgan Rhoades finished fourth overall with 101 while Ruth Hummell was seventh with 115.

Negaunee finished second in the team rankings with 568 and Munising third with 574. The Mustangs’ Taylor Downs was sixth in the individual rankings with 107 and Marissa Neveau was 10th for the Miners with 126.

Most of Wednesday’s team will be at conference tournaments today. Marquette, Gladstone and Menominee will be at Great Northern Conference event at Kingsford, while Negaunee will at the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet at Wawonowin Country Club in Champion.
