Marquette boys win, Negaunee girls 2nd at Range Bank Invite golf meet

CHAMPION — The Marquette boys golf team had a solid day on the course Tuesday afternoon and took home the title at the Negaunee Range Bank Invitational played at Wawonowin Country Club.

The Redmen finished with a score of 320, while Norway was runner-up with 343.

“The boys played really well from top to bottom,” MSHS head coach Ben Smith said. “(Karsten) Kamps and (Joseph) Luke set the tone, but all five of them finished in the top eight. This was the best weather of the year and the kids took advantage of it.”

Gladstone finished third with 376, while Kingsford was fourth (387), Westwood fifth (396), Negaunee sixth (399) and Iron Mountain seventh (450).

Gladstone’s Rudy Peterson earned medalist honors by shooting 74, but Marquette filled the next two spots with Kamps finishing second (78) and Luke taking third (79). Norway’s Jeff Van Holla was fourth (80) and the Redmen’s Jordan Jurmu fifth (81).

In the girls meet, Kingsford came out on top with 432 with Negaunee taking second with 460. Iron Mountain was third (496) and Westwood finished fourth (507). Marquette and Gladstone didn’t have enough players for a team score.

The Flivvers’ Haley Gabriel was medalist after shooting a 98, but Marquette’s Morgan Rhoades was right behind her in second (100). Kingsford’s Kate Cook took third (104), Negaunee’s Rylee Ring was fourth (108) and another Flivver, Cheyenne Moyer, finished fifth (111).
