GRAYLING — Junior Tia Mattila and senior Madison Pruett each collected four hits in the Ishpeming High School softball team’s five-inning, 18-0 victory over Brimley at the Grayling Tournament on Saturday.

In the Hematites’ other game at the event that day, Ishpeming fell to Indian River Inland Lakes 16-0, while on Friday, IHS played Grayling in a regular-season game and lost 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh.

Against Brimley, Mattila was 4 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored, while Pruett was also 4 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs scored. Each stole a base.

Teammate Korey Kaukola was 2 for 5 with a triple, double, two RBIs, three runs, a walk and a stolen base; Myah McNab was 2 for 4 with a triple and double, two RBIs and two runs; and Willow LaChapelle was 2 for 3 with a triple, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

They helped freshman Hailey Hytinen get the win after she scattered five hits and struck out three.

The Hematites scored five runs in the bottom of the first and added nine more in the third for a 14-2 lead.

Ishpeming opened the tourney against MHSAA Division 4 powerhouse Indian River Inland Lakes, which like the Hematites reached the regional finals last season. The Bulldogs also won the D-4 state title in 2017.

Ishpeming managed just two singles, one each by Mattila and Pruett, in three innings against Inland Lakes, which struck out nine Hematite batters.

Hytinen absorbed that loss, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing eight runs on two hits while walking one and fanning one.

Against Grayling on Friday, the Vikings scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 6-5 deficit. After tying the score, Grayling moved the winning run to third base, forcing IHS coach Ben McGuire to draw in the infield, but to no avail as the Vikings got the winning hit.

In that game, Pruett went 4 for 4 on what McGuire reported was her birthday with three RBIs and a run scored. Mattila was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run, while Ella Luke hit a double and scored.

Hytinen took that loss, going all seven innings and allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks with one strikeout.

Ishpeming has a doubleheader at Manistique at 4 p.m. today, followed by another twinbill at Hancock at 4 p.m. Thursday.
