Gladstone wins first Great Northern Conference baseball crown with sweep of Marquette

MARQUETTE — The Gladstone baseball team clinched the Great Northern Conference championship with a sweep of Marquette here Thursday. The Braves won 3-0 and 22-4.

The opener remained scoreless until the fourth inning.

Zach Hanson earned the win for the Braves over six innings. He allowed five hits, no runs and one walk while striking out three. Crow finished with two RBIs and two hits, and Cole Hansen notched one hit and one RBI.

“(Marquette pitcher) Brendan Kaski pitched a real strong game for us and we just couldn’t manage to score him any runs,” MSHS manager Spencer Larson said. “We had our chances again, we just left them stranded.”

Leading the Redmen at the plate was Jake Allard-Soucey with two hits. Kaski went all six innings and only walked one while scattering seven hits and striking out five.

The Braves exploded for 22 runs in just four innings in the nightcap, including seven in the opening inning.

“We just weren’t ready to go in the second game,” Larson said of his Redmen. “We managed to scratch out two runs in the second inning but just couldn’t keep it going.”

The Redmen were only able to record three hits, two by Brady Wright and one by Erik Johnson.

The Redmen used three pitchers in the contest with Blake Henriksen recording the loss.
