Gladstone roughs up Redettes Tuesday

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s rough start didn’t get any easier with Gladstone coming to town on Tuesday.

The Braves, who got as far as the MHSAA Division 3 regional finals before falling to Negaunee 2-1 last spring, had a couple of big innings to sweep the Redettes 12-6 and 18-3.

The Braves scored seven runs in the third inning of the opener to take an 8-1 lead, though put together back-to-back six- and 11-run frames in the nightcap to end the game on the mercy rule after four innings.

“That’s been the story of our season — the one big inning,” said Marquette coach Paul Seibert, whose team fell to 0-9. “If we could avoid that one big inning, we’d stay out of a lot of trouble.

“But the girls are coming along fine. Gladstone is a great hitting team and a couple mistakes just opens the door for them.”

The Redettes’ Amanda McIntire pitched all seven innings of Game 1, allowing 12 runs on 13 hits with five walks. Her counterpart for the Braves, Andie Belanger, went the first three innings and got the win, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Morgan Letriello went the final four innings for GHS.

Marquette’s Maddie Carter and Alexis Trombley each went 3 for 4 with a double and triple and two runs scored. Carter also hit a home run to only end up a single short of the cycle while knocking in three runs.

McIntire was 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI.

In Game 2, the Redettes jumped out to a 3-1 lead before the Braves exploded for 17 runs between the third and fourth innings to end things early.

Rayna Warchock took the pitching loss for MSHS, going all four innings while allowing 13 hits and four walks and chalking up one K.

Belanger again got the pitching win, scattering two hits and two walks while fanning two in also going the distance.

Carter and Trombley each were 1 for 2, Carter hitting a two-run double in the first inning while Trombley scored a run.

Herioux and teammate Taylor Zeise were each 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Herioux also had a triple and scored four times, while Zeise scored twice.

After Marquette’s doubleheader against Negaunee on Thursday was postponed due to poor field conditions, the Redettes are set to travel to Menominee for a twinbill beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
