Gladstone netters top Gwinn 6-2

Sirois earns hard-fought win for Modeltowners

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves broke into the win column for the first time this season, taking a 6-2 tennis decision from the Gwinn Modeltowners here Thursday.

“It was great for the team to get a win, and we had some good matches tonight,” said Braves’ coach Dan Williams. “I’m happy to see improvement with each match we play. Hopefully, we can keep some of this momentum going for our next match.”

Gladstone’s Tyler Barteld earned a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Mason Bockert, overcoming a 5-2 deficit in the second set in No. 2 singles and Dylan Anderson and Colin Smith rallied past Aaron Borrett and Sam Compton 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

“Tyler had a great comeback win,” said Williams. “He started to play more consistent tennis, was able to bring it to a tie-breaker and ended up winning it. This is Tyler’s second win in a row. He finds a way to win, which is great. Colin and Dylan had a back-and-forth match as well. After losing the first set, they were able to cut down on errors and be a little more aggressive with placing shots and that made a big difference. All the doubles teams won tonight, which was great to see.”

Gwinn won a three-setter at No. 3 singles in which Chris Sirois outlasted Colby Torvinen 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The Braves resume at Negaunee Tuesday.
