Boddy leaves boys basketball job at Manistique

MANISTIQUE — Manistique boys basketball coach Bill Boddy has decided to move on after one year in charge of the program.

Boddy has accepted a teaching position at Kingsford, two miles from his hometown of Iron Mountain. He will also help coach the varsity football and basketball teams there.

Boddy says the move is all about moving closer to home.

“Honestly, it had nothing to do with Manistique at all,” he said. “I had an opportunity to move to Kingsford, and I just want to get back to where my roots are from and where I grew up.”

The Emeralds went 4-15 under Boddy’s direction in the 2018-19 season, with their biggest highlight coming in a 68-65 home upset victory over Gladstone on Dec. 7, eight days after losing 71-28 at the same Braves’ team.

“That was awesome,” Boddy said. “Losing by 35 and coming back eight days later and beating a team was really exciting. I was really happy for the kids, and I will definitely never forget that moment.”

Coaching at Manistique was Boddy’s first varsity coaching job, and he said he had fun with it and learned along the way.

“It was fun. I had a good group of kids, and they worked hard,” Boddy said. “We competed there for the first time in awhile. Whoever coaches there next year has a lot to work with. We’re not losing much, so hopefully they get a good hand.

“I learned a lot. It was a huge coaching experience. A lot goes on behind the scenes, and you find out what happens. I didn’t realize what goes into it, and I will use it going forward to my next adventure. Overall, it was definitely a good experience. From my athletic director, to the kids, to the parents — they were all really easy to work with and I’m thankful for that.”

The move was approved at Monday’s board meetings at Manistique and Kingsford. Boddy says he’s looking forward to coaching at Kingsford with guys he knows.

“I know the coaches there pretty well. They’re looking forward to me being there,” he said.

“I don’t know the exact specifics of the job yet, but I’ll be helping out there one way or another.”
