Big rally lifts Marquette Redmen baseball team to sweep of Negaunee

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School varsity baseball team was finally able to play a pair of home games on Monday afternoon, earning 5-0 and 8-7 victories over rival Negaunee at Haley Memorial Field.

All five Redmen runs in the opener came in the second inning, while a complete-game performance from senior pitcher Blake Henriksen kept the Miners in check for the rest of the game.

Henriksen allowed six hits and struck out a season-high 12 batters while walking three. Kennan Johnson had a multihit game for the Redmen while Henriksen and Connor Steer each had singles.

Game 2 had much more drama, as the Miners took a comfortable 7-1 lead into the seventh inning.

Marquette eventually loaded the bases as the rally started with a bloop single to left field from senior Brendan Kaski. With every base occupied after junior Jakob Peterson was hit by a pitch, the wheels started to come off for the Miners, allowing several walks and hits as Marquette crept back into the game.

With the score tied 7-7 with two outs, the Redmen’s Jonathon Jason stepped up to the plate and ripped one by the third baseman, bringing home the game-winning run for the second walkoff victory in three games.

“We did a much better job of putting the ball in play and advancing the runners (today),” Marquette head coach Spencer Larson said. “We still left way too many stranded, but that will come in time.

“We played solid defense and pitching was good for us. We still have room to improve, but overall I was real happy with these two games.”

Jason also earned the win on the mound in Game 2 for the Redmen, going the last 1 2/3 innings and giving up two hits while walking one and striking out one. Kennan Johnson started Game 2 on the rubber, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, walking four and striking out three.

Marquette hosts Escanaba on Wednesday.
