MARQUETTE — The high school basketball season has come to an end, but some local teams are still racking up awards.

This time, the awards were for work in the classroom as both Negaunee programs and the Marquette boys made the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Academic All-State team Friday.

The Negaunee boys had the highest grade point average (3.841) in not only Division 3, but also the entire state. The Marquette boys also finished high in the rankings, taking third place (3.737) in Division 1. This is the seventh straight year that the Redmen had received an Academic All-State award.

Iron Mountain also finished in the top 10 in its division as it took fourth in Division 3. Gladstone and Escanaba earned honorable mention in Division 2, while Republic-Michigamme, Bessemer, and Engadine did the same in Division 4.

Over on the girls side, the Negaunee girls finished eighth overall in Division 3 (3.894).

Other U.P. teams that placed in the top 10 were Gladstone, who finished third in Division 2, while Mid Peninsula (second place), Ewen-Trout Creek (fourth) and St. Ignace (10th) all earned spots in Division 4.

Girls teams that earned honorable mention were Marquette in Division 1; Menominee and Sault Ste. Marie in Division 2; Ishpeming, Westwood, Gwinn, Calumet and Iron Mountain in Division 3; and Munising, North Central, DeTour and Pickford in Division 4.
