CLEVELAND — While their team finished third, the Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team still collected a pretty feather in their cap at the GLIAC Championships when the meet concluded Saturday.

Junior Rachel Helm not only made it four individual wins in four days, but was named the conference Women’s Swimmer of the Year for the second straight season.

Helm won the 200-yard backstroke in a GLIAC Championship-record time of 1 minutes, 56.21 seconds, breaking her own record of 1:56.38.

Hers was one of three wins posted by the Wildcats in the meet’s final day.

Sophomore Lena Soulas won for the second time at the meet, this time taking the 100-yard freestyle in 50.59 seconds.

Also in the 200 back, Kilburn was fifth in 2:01.79 while senior Sara Foucault was 11th and senior Becca Arakelian finished well enough to also earn the Wildcats points.

In the 100 free, Vaitkus was ninth in 52.05 while freshman Emma Love also earned points.

Sophomore Gabriella Spajic placed fifth in the 1,650 free in 17:21.33, while junior Nicola Pasquire was 11th.

In diving, senior Angela Probstfeld took second with 461.30 points, while junior Jamie Kimble was sixth with 425.20.

The Wildcats finished with 725 points as Grand Valley State won with 938.5 and Wayne State was runner-up with 871. NMU also finished nearly 350 points ahead of the fourth-place squad, Saginaw Valley State, which had 383. Davenport was fifth and Ashland sixth.

Next up for Northern is the NCAA Division II Championships that begin Tuesday, March 12, in Indianapolis.
