Marquette Senior High School hosts MHSAA Upper Peninsula swim finals

MARQUETTE — The MHSAA Upper Peninsula Swimming & Diving Championships begin this afternoon at the Marquette Senior High School pool with diving.

Girls diving competition, both preliminary and final rounds, will be held first beginning at about 2:30 p.m. with the boys to follow.

All swimming events will be held Saturday starting at 10 a.m., with boys and girls events alternating. The top 12 in each event score points for their teams, including 16 points for first place, 13 for second down to 1 point for 12th. Points are doubled in relays.

Admission each day is $10 for adults, with seating available in the pool balcony and in a school theater where a live video feed will be shown.

Ten U.P. schools compete in the same division — Marquette, Westwood, Ishpeming-Negaunee, Manistique, Gladstone-Escanaba, Kingsford-Iron Mountain, Houghton, Hancock, Sault Ste. Marie and Rudyard.

Last year, Gladstone won the girls championship and Houghton the boys with Marquette finishing as runner-up in each.
