Marquette Redettes dish out 29 assists in big 78-31 girls basketball win at Houghton
HOUGHTON — Marquette took charge of the floor early in rolling to a 78-31 high school girls basketball victory at Houghton on Wednesday night.
The Redettes’ all-around game made life difficult for Houghton.
“Marquette has a very nice team,” Houghton coach Julie Filpus said. “They’ve got athleticism, size and strength and experience and they overpowered us in every part of the game. Pretty much from the beginning to the end, they displayed their dominance.”
Gremlins sophomore guard Maryellen Trewhella showed some fight, though, putting up 14 points for the Orange and Black.
“Our sophomore guard, Maryellen Trewhella, from beginning to end, was aggressive offensively and defensively,” Filpus said. “The good thing for our girls is that we get to play them again in a week and we get to work to improve at some of the areas that were poor tonight.”
Redettes coach Ben Smith said his players worked well as a team.
“I thought we really shared the ball well,” Smith said. “(We) worked hard to get into positive spaces and if we had a play to make, we tried to make it. If it wasn’t there, we made a play for somebody else. We had 29 assists on 39 buckets, which is awesome. Everyone who played had an assist.”
The game was a makeup game from the previous day, but that deter MSHS senior Avery Ledy, who scored 19 points.
“Having this (makeup game) and to have it be an early game and stuff (gives it) just a little bit different vibe,” Smith said. “You never know quite what you’re going to get.
“I thought the girls missed a couple of plays early and then really got into the groove at the end of the first quarter and kind of rode that to a solid first half.”
Smith was pleased with how his team responded at halftime, showing increased energy in the game’s final 16 minutes.
“(We) came out with some solid energy in the second half,” he said. “You’d like to be as consistent with that stuff as you can, but some nights it works a little better like it did tonight.
“Tonight was (a win) that we can hopefully build off of.”
