Huebner leads NMU runners at Pointer Invite
STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Led by senior Shayla Huebner’s two victories, the Northern Michigan University women’s track team won six events and captured the team title at the Pointer Invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday.
The Wildcats scored 161 points, eight points ahead of runner-up the host Pointers and just over 10 points ahead of UW-Eau Claire.
Huebner, a Marquette Senior High School graduate, earned NCAA Division II national meet provisional qualifying with her 57.19-second timing for the win in the 400-meter dash. It’s also the 26th fastest time in D-2 this winter.
Teammates Paige Dutcher, also a senior, and junior Paige Du Bois also cracked the top five in the event. Dutcher was second in 57.85 and also second all-time at NMU, while Du Bois was fifth in 59.84 and eighth all-time at NMU.
Huebner also won the 200 in 26.01, leading a Wildcats podium sweep as junior Sydney Peters was second and Dutcher third. Huebner is also third all-time at NMU and McPeters fifth.
Senior Michelle Juergen won the high jump in 5-feet-6, matching an NCAA provisional mark she set earlier in the season, and was third in the long jump in 17-10 1/4.
Sophomore Elise Longley led an NMU 1-2 finish in the mile, winning in 5:16.57 for the 10th best ever at NMU, while freshman Anna kelley was runner-up in 5:25.39.
Northern also won the 60 dash and 60 hurdles. Sophomore Izabelle Peterson, another MSHS grad, won the 60 in 7.78 as McPeters was third in 7.91. In the 60 hurdles, sophomore Nina Augsten won in 9.41.
Senior Abby Fifarek led four Wildcats finishing in the top five in the 3,000. Fifarek was second in 10:51.78, while junior Hanna Torvi was third in 10:54.28, Kelley fourth and Longley fifth.
The 4-by-400 relay was third in 4:09.77 and consisted of junior Megan Martin, senior Lynsey Collins of Escanaba and freshmen Hannah Jones and Sydney Ormsbee.
Sophomore Dunja Drobac was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 34-11.
NMU competes at the Grand Valley State Big Meet this weekend in Allendale.
