Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Center Greco-Roman wrestlers medal

MARQUETTE — Greco-Roman wrestlers from the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site won silver and bronze medlas later Friday at the Dave Schultz Memorial meet in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

NMU’s Carter Nielsen finished as runner-up in the 82-kilogram (180.8-pound) division after he lost in the championship match. He faced 2018 World Team member Kamal Bey of Sunkist Kids, scoring the first two points of the match and tied after one round 2-2. But he ultimately lost 6-4.

In a third-place match, Northern’s Jesse Porter defeated Brandon Mueller of the U.S. Air Force at 77 kg (169.8 lbs.). After trailing 1-0 after one round, Porter came back in the final round for a 7-1 victory.

Two other NMU-OTS athletes were fourth-place finishers. NMU’s Spencer Woods at 82 kg lost to Vald Dombskiy of Army WCAP in his third-place match, while Northern’s Khymba Johnson at 97 kg (213.8 lbs.) lost to Eric Twohey of Minnesota Storm 6-4.

Overall, the NMU-OTS team won seven medals and had two fourth-place finishes.
