Munising boys use strong second half to beat Forest Park

CRYSTAL FALLS — A game of momentum shifts in scoring ultimately saw the Munising boys basketball team come out with a 77-63 victory over Forest Park in a back and forth contest.

Munising (7-2) took a 23-13 lead after one quarter of play before the Trojans (4-4) swung momentum with a 23-point second quarter of their own. The Mustangs were held to 12 points in the second frame as Forest Park took a 36-35 lead into halftime.

The Mustangs got that lead back in the third, outscoring the Trojans 22-18 for a 57-54 lead after 24 minutes.

Munising stepped up on defense in the fourth, holding Forest Park to nine points while scoring 20 to gradually pull away for the win.

Senior Anthony Mattson led the Mustangs with 27 points while senior Jesse Matson had 19. Junior Joshua Huotari and senior Eli Werner each had 10 for the Mustangs.

Munising travels to Carney-Nadeau (8-1) on Monday while Forest Park hosts Bark River-Harris (4-4).

Chassell 73, Republic-MIchigamme 43

at Republic, senior Jake Carlson and sophomore Eli Luokkala combined for 33 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks fell to 1-6 on the season.

Republic-MIchigamme found itself down 23-9 after one and 39-17 at halftime.

Unable to climb out of the hole, Republic was outscored 34-26 in the second half as Chassell improved to 6-2.

Carlson led the Hawks with 22 points while Luokkala had 11.

Republic shot 5 of 6 from the free throw line while Chassell was 10 of 12.

The Hawks host Superior Central on Monday while Chassell hosts Ewen-Trout Creek on Thursday.
