Hematites, Redettes spikers sweep on the road

ISHPEMING — Ishpeming and Marquette each scored straight-sets victories on the road in high school volleyball matches played Thursday night.

Both those teams along with Gwinn, Munising, Superior Central and Manistique are scheduled to participate in the Northern Michigan University High School Invitational on Saturday morning.

Ishpeming 3, Westwood 0

At Westwood, Hailey Smith led the Hematites on the attack as they won 25-15, 25-23, 25-17.

Smith had a team-high eight kills while adding seven digs and five set assists.

Teammate Korey Kaukola led her squad with 10 digs and five service aces while making four kills.

Emma Poirier had six kills, four aces and five digs; Madison Pruett had five kills and four digs; Jocelynn Nyman four kills; Brylea Ranta two aces, two kills and four digs; Tia Mattila three aces and three digs; and Myah McNab two aces and four digs.

Marquette 3, Menominee 0

At Menominee, the Redettes had little trouble while prevailing 25-15, 25-18, 25-15.

“We came out strong and controlled each set with a combination of strong serving and an aggressive attack,” MSHS head coach Mike Morgan said.

Statistical leaders for Marquette were Seiler Hruska with 13 kills and four service aces, Loren Burnette four blocks, Mikaila Graham 11 digs and Maiya King 26 assists.
