Westwood girls tennis team blanks Gwinn while beating raindrops
ISHPEMING — Westwood and Gwinn managed to get in their high school girls tennis meet once the skies cleared Wednesday afternoon with the Patriots winning 8-0.
“It was nice to get the meet in with all the rain we got overnight,” Patriots coach Chris Jackson said after his team improved to 7-3.
Madelyn Koski was a winner at No. 1 singles, taking out Gwinn’s Taylor Jancsi 6-4, 6-0, while at No. 2, Tessa Leece defeated the Modeltowners’ Joleigh Martinez 6-0, 6-1.
“Madelyn got off to a slow start but regained her focus and finished out the match strong,” Jackson said. “Tessa is adding to her game and is finding more offense in her play.”
At No. 1 doubles, Karlie Patron and Katelyn Anttila triumphed over the GHS’ Raina Humphrey and Karlee Walker 6-0, 6-2.
“Our doubles lineup is getting more consistent and playing more aggressively early in points,” Jackson said.
No. 3 flights played just a single longer set, while Gwinn was unable to field players at the No. 4 flights.
In another match, Marquette defeated Munising 7-0 but results were incomplete, while Negaunee-Ishpeming was postponed.
In matches today, Negaunee hosts Iron Mountain, Marquette travels to Menominee and Gwinn goes to Gladstone, all at 4 p.m., while Ishpeming is at West Iron County at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
Munising plays at Westwood at 4 p.m. Friday.
