MSHS soccer wins pair over the weekend

EAGLE RIVER, Wisconsin — Senior Evan Phillips and junior Trevor Salmon each scored three goals as the Marquette Senior High School boys soccer team swept a pair of games at the Northland Pines Soccer Quad on Saturday.

The Redmen opened against host Northland Pines and won 2-1. MSHS junior Pablo Sanchez opened the scoring with freshman Nick Lindberg assisting, then Phillips got his first goal before halftime on assists from Salmon and senior Harrison Smith to make it 2-0 at the break.

While Marquette was unable to score again, its defense that included seniors Nico Vermaat and Soren Higgins, juniors Hunter Sides and Cross Lakenen and sophomore Carter Beres kept the Eagles from catching up.

NP didn’t score its goal until the final three minutes on a penalty kick.

Senior Kyle Michelson worked in the Redmen net in the first half and sophomore Liam Jeevar in the second half.

Marquette had an easier time in Game 2, blasting Peshtigo 11-3 as Salmon scored three goals; Phillips two; and Sanchez, seniors Garrett Zueger and Liam Darr, junior Mack Vezina and sophomores Peyton Osborne and Connor Johnson one each.

Among those earning assists were Darr, Zueger, Lindberg, Sanchez, Osborne, Phillips, Michelson and Higgins.

Michelson again worked in the MSHS net in the first half and Jeevar in the second.
