Negaunee softball team scores at will in twinbill sweep at Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Negaunee softball team continued to hit the ball well as the Miners swept another doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

Negaunee defeated Iron Mountain 14-8 in the first game before pounding the Mountaineers 15-0 in the second contest.

“We started off the first game slow, but we busted out in the sixth inning and then carried it over into the next game,” Miners head coach Randy Carlson said. “That’s two nights in a row where we’ve had a big first inning.

“We haven’t had a lot of days off, so it’s hard to carry momentum over.”

In the opener, the teams traded punches in the first few innings. Both teams scored a run in the first inning and then the Miners (15-4) plated three runs in the top of the third. IM answered back, scoring five in its half of the frame to take a 6-4 advantage.

After that, it was all Negaunee. The Miners cut their deficit to one in the fifth and then scored eight runs in the sixth to break the game open.

Hannah Voskuhl led Negaunee at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Teammate Abby Nelson went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, while Katelyn Lammi was 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

Emma Thomann was the Mountaineers’ leader as she hit a grand slam homer.

Malorie Munson earned the win in the pitching circle for the Miners as she gave up 10 hits and one walk, striking out six. Lilly Van Loon took the loss for IM as she surrendered 18 hits and one walk while fanning two.

Negaunee kept rolling in the nightcap as it scored 12 runs in the first and capped things off with three in the fifth to end it early.

Nelson was 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Miners, while Cassidy Orr had two hits and two RBIs. Nelson also picked up the win in the circle as she gave up only two hits and one walk while racking up six strikeouts.

The Miners play at Gladstone Thursday.
