Negaunee girls, boys win home track meet

NEGAUNEE — Four teams competed in a track and field meet hosted by Negaunee High School on Thursday afternoon and the host Miners finished at the top of the podium.

Negaunee won team titles on both the boys and girls side with the boys earning a team score of 130 followed by Ishpeming with 89, L’Anse with 31 and Gwinn with 6.

The Ishpeming boys won nine events, which included three relays (4X800, 4X100 and 4X400) and two victories from Hart Holmgren in the high jump and long jump.

However, Negaunee earned five first place finishes and 12 second place finishes to secure the points needed to win the team title. The Miners won the 4X200-meter relay and got two distance wins from Colton Yesney (1,600 and 3,200 runs) along with two wins from Mason Granger in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

The Negaunee girls finished with 129 points, followed by Ishpeming with 75, Gwinn with 41 and L’Anse with 4.

The Miners won 10 events including three out of the four relays (4X800, 4X200, 4X400) and three of the five field events. Emily Paupore won two events for Negaunee in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

Ishpeming took first in five events with Katie Loman winning two in both hurdles, while Gwinn won the other relay (4X100) and Marissa Delmont won the shot put.

Negaunee and Gwinn go to the Negaunee Lions Invitational on Saturday, while Ishpeming competes at the Marquette County Meet on Monday.
